The next night

Groggily my steps thunder to the door, the banging stirred me from my slumber, and I jump out of bed to answer it. Not bothering to throw on a shirt, I am grumpy knowing that who ever is at the door will gawk at my scars.

My big hand yanks the door toward me, “What?!” I roar, regretting my tone when I spot Headmaster Carlyle was the one banging. A look of confusion greets me.

My angry face morphs into a smile as I welcome him into the living room. I hastily gather Watt’s clothes that he strung out when he started shifting the night before. Carlyle eyes the mess that covers the rest of the room, a sneer on his pulls at the scar that runs down his face.

I set the pile down on the floor at my feet as I take a spot on the worn couch across from where the Headmaster chose, a leather recliner. “Excuse the mess and my tone, Headmaster. I am still a little tired from my shift as night watchmen for Watt. This full moon seems to be the worst for Watt to control his rage.” I say rubbing my forearm.

In all the times I’ve guarded Watt, this was the only time he scratched me; normally the silver chains sting he enough that he doesn’t struggle against them. “I see, well that would be why you two weren’t at the welcoming ceremony. Being that you and your housemates are the descendants of the most well-known nightmares, it was a shame that you weren't there to help us greet the new monsters,” he replies in a disapproving tone, his eyes darting around the messy room.

“I am sorry to have let you down, Headmaster, but I couldn’t have Watt terrorizing the school. As for the others, I do not know why they missed it,” I say, my head hung in shame.

“What’s done is done. I do have a mission for you and your friends, to make up for last night.”

My eyes progress from the pile of Watt’s clothes to search Carlyle’s face. Once I make eye contact, his lips tip into a smile, no, more of a smirk, an evil one.

“There is a new monster, the first in his family to attend our wonderful academy. I want not only you but your friends to welcome him into this castle and your cottage here. His ancestry is a mystery that I task you to unravel.”

“But Headmaster, this house is for the original nightmares and their children. How can someone unknown just be thrown in? Do
